1. NLSIU Bangalore — India's #1 Law School
National Law School of India University is consistently India's top-ranked NLU. The competition for its ~80 BA LLB seats is the most intense in CLAT — you need a rank in the top 70–80.
What it's known for: Research culture, strong alumni network (judges, senior advocates, top partners), highest placement packages. Average placements at Tier 1 law firms like AZB, Cyril Amarchand, Trilegal at 18–22 LPA.
Honest note: NLSIU has a very competitive internal culture. Students who thrive here are genuinely passionate about law, not just ranking-chasers.
2. NALSAR Hyderabad — The Consistent Performer
National Academy of Legal Studies and Research is ranked #2 consistently. Strong in corporate law, research, and mooting. CLAT cutoff: approximately rank 150–180.
What sets it apart: Excellent faculty, strong placement record, cosmopolitan student culture. Average placements at 14–18 LPA at top firms.
3. NLU Delhi — The AILET Special
NLU Delhi is unique — it doesn't accept CLAT scores. You need to crack AILET separately. Only 110 BA LLB seats. Extremely competitive.
Why it matters: Being in Delhi gives NLU Delhi students unmatched access to courts, law firms, government and Parliament. The location premium is real.
4. WBNUJS Kolkata — The Hidden Gem
West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences is often underrated. Consistently top 4 in NIRF. Strong in international law, human rights, and corporate law. CLAT cutoff: rank 250–300.
5. NLU Jodhpur — Rising Fast
Strong industry connections, growing placement record, excellent infrastructure. CLAT cutoff: rank 350–400. A strong choice for students targeting corporate law careers.
RMLNLU Lucknow — The Best NLU for UP Students
For students from Prayagraj, Allahabad, Lucknow and surrounding areas, Ram Manohar Lohia NLU Lucknow is the most accessible top NLU. CLAT cutoff: approximately rank 750–900. Growing placement record, excellent state-level connections.

State Quota — The Factor Most Students Ignore
Every NLU reserves a portion of seats for students from its home state. RMLNLU reserves seats for UP students. GNLU for Gujarat students. If you're from UP and targeting RMLNLU, your effective cutoff rank is lower than the general cutoff.
Always check the seat matrix for your home state NLU before setting your target rank.
